Teams from the Institute of Law and Technology of the Masaryk University (MUNI) from Brno, Research Institute (RI) and Department of Innovation and Digitalisation in Law (ID Law) met in Vienna, on the 23rd of May, for a full day of exchanges on the experiences working on third party funded projects. The day started with a brief introduction to each of the institutions’ activities by the departments’ representatives Doc. JUDr. Matěj Myška, Ph.D., Dr. Christof Tschohl and Univ.-Prof. Dr. Nikolaus Forgó, respectively. Prof. JUDr. Radim Polčák, Ph.D., who joined online from Brno, addressed those present and shared some insights into the foundation of the Institute of Law and Technology. All three institutions have in common their participation, as legal partners, in national and European Union-wide projects, especially in the fields of technology, health and AI.
The morning session continued with a presentation by Ibrahim Sabra, who shared insights from his research project, From Assistance to Adjudication: AI in Global South Courts, conducted as part of the Stimson-Microsoft Fellowship.
Fellow ID Law team member Olga Startseva covered the BETTER4U (Preventing obesity through Biologically and bEhaviorally Tailored inTERventions for you) Project and ethical and legal challenges faced within that Project, especially concerning data access and sharing and achieving compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation through the implementation of a Data Protection Impact Assessment. Michael Schmidbauer gave a presentation about the interdisciplinary legal research done for the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Machine Learning Driven Precision Imaging (CD-Labor) and the main legal uncertainties faced by training and implementing Clinical Decision Support Systems. Catarina Almeida closed the ID Law presentations with an overview on the Department’s contribution to the Biobanking and BioMolecular resources Research Infrastructure Österreich (BBMRI.at), with emphasis on the tasks carried out within the Legal Helpdesk and resource sharing through the website’s Knowledge Base on Legal Issues on the topic of biobanking.
Most of the afternoon was taken by guest presenters from MUNI and RI, who generously shared their insights and research carried out as part of the work in the projects their institutions are part of. The topic of AI was the overarching theme of the conversations of the day: what AI brings to the legal field and what challenges are faced by the legal professions regarding their longevity and resilience for the future; AI’s use in universities for teaching, learning and evaluation of students; AI in hiring processes; AI and healthcare and technology, among others.
ID Law is grateful to all those involved in making this day possible and looks forward to welcoming MUNI and RI team members again soon!
