Application as a Visiting Researcher

The group of Professor Nikolaus Forgó at the Department of Innovation and Digitalisation in Law accepts incoming researchers for a period of up to 3 months. Longer stays are possible, but need to be individually discussed. 

Requirements:

  • You have (at least) a finished master degree in legal studies or in another field, where you had interdisciplinary points of contact with legal studies
  • You are enrolled in a PhD-programme or are a higher-level researcher (Post-Doc, Associate Professor, etc…)
  • You are aiming to pursue research on the legal and societal aspects of digitalization.
  • If you are a PhD-Student: You have at least one recommendation letter from a higher-grade researcher. 

What we can offer:

  • Access to the research library of the University and the library of the Department
  • Participation in the events hosted by the Department (as well as our social activities)
  • A diverse, international team researching various aspects of digitalization and law
  • You will be able to use the premises of the department. Please note, however, that we operate on a shared-desk system
  • Opportunity to present your research at one of the lunch lectures organized by the department, or/and at the dedicated team meeting

Please note that we can not provide any funds for your stay. If you are accepted for a stay, this does not mean that there will be any form of contractual relationship between you and the University of Vienna. You will not be admitted to any PhD or other postgraduate program of the University but invited to pursue your own research as part of our department. 

Our group’s focus points currently are in particular: 

  • Regulation of Information Technology, in particular Artificial Intelligence
  • Use of (health) data in European Regulation (focus on legal acts such as the General Data Protection Regulation, European Health Data Space Regulation etc.)
  • Intellectual Property and modern technology 

What you need to send us to get an application started: 

  • An academic CV including a list of publications
  • A motivation letter detailing why you choose our department and the University of Vienna for your research stay
  • A short summary of the academic project you are planning to work on while you stay with us (e.g. your PhD-thesis, a planned paper…)
  • A copy of your highest degree
  • If you are a PhD-student: a recommendation letter from a higher-grade researcher working in the field.

Please note the following deadlines for application: 

  • For stays starting between the 1st of January and the 1st of March (or on the 1st of March) please send us your application until the 1st of September of the previous year.
  • For stays starting between the 2nd of March and the 1st of June (or on the 1st of June) please send us your application until the 1st of January.
  • For stays starting between the 2nd of June and the 1st of September (or on the 1st of September) please send us your application until the 1st of March.
  • For stays starting between the 2nd of September and the 1st of January (or on the 1st of January) please send us your application until the 1st of June.

After the deadline has passed for the respective period of stay and we have considered your application, we will invite you to a short online-meeting to get to know you. Please understand, that we try to process applications as fast as possible, but it may take some time to get a notification after the deadline has passed.
