Roundtable: How can online hate speech be stopped?

27.02.2019 14:00 - 17:00

The proliferation of hate speech in mass media, online violence against journalists, and rapid distribution of fake news have raised concerns regarding the future of democracy.

How can hate speech be contained without affecting the freedom of expression? Is legislation a solution?  Which are the best newsroom practices? These and other questions will be answered by the roundtable on 27 February 2019, organised by the "Forum Journalismus und Medien Wien (fjum)", "Presseclub Concordia", "Representation of the European Commission in Austria" and "Paneuropean University (Bratislava)".

Univ.-Prof. Nikolaus Forgó will be part of a panel, discussing: 'Can regulation and legislation be an effective tool for countering online hate speech in media? Can regulation be compatible with freedom of expression?'.
