Initially, the idea of the GPAI was born out of the Canadian and French Canadian and French G7 Presidencies in 2018 and 2019 and was officially proposed at the Biarritz Summit in August 2019. The founding Members of the GPAI are Australia, Canada, the European Union, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore, Slovenia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The Partnership is also supported by the OECD, which hosts the GPAI’s Secretariat in Paris.

The GPAI seeks to promote a responsible and human-centric development and use of AI in a manner consistent with human rights, fundamental freedoms, and shared democratic values. To achieve this goal, the initiative focuses on between theory and practice on AI by supporting cutting-edge research and applied activities on AI-related priorities. In the short term, the GPAI’s experts will explore possible applications of AI in order to tackle the adverse consequences of the COVID-19 crisis.

The GPAI is composed of four Working Groups that focus on the topics 1) Responsible AI, 2) Data Governance, 3) The Future of Work, and 4) Innovation and Commercialisation. With her expertise on data protection and data ethics, Christiane Wendehorst was invited to joined the Data Governance Working Group.
