Dipl. Jur. Selen Yakar, LL.B.
Selen Yakar is a project assistant (prae doc) at the Department of Innovation and Digitalisation in Law and a doctoral student at the University of Bonn. She studied law in Cologne and Istanbul and developed an interest in legal policy issues such as gender equality during her studies. As part of her PhD as well as several lectures and publications, she has focused on the detection and prevention of gender discrimination through algorithmic systems and is co-author of the handbook ‘Gender-neutral AI’ together with Professor Dr. Susanne Lilian Gössl, LL.M., University Bonn.
„The EU AI Act in the light of algorithmic gender discrimination“
In her PhD thesis, Selen examines the degree to which the European AI Act can prevent gender-based discrimination by algorithmic systems. She analyses to what extent the existing national and international regulations include discrimination by algorithmic systems in their scope and compares these findings with the regulatory content of the AI Act. She also analyses other regulatory approaches in relation to algorithmic systems, namely the Council of Europe's AI Convention and the UK's National AI Strategy and identifies the similarities and differences to the AI Act. The dissertation concludes with a proposal for improvement.
