Teaching
The Department of Innovation and Digitalisation in Law offers a wide variety of courses—several of them in cooperation with other universities, law firms, and further institutions.
The department’s objective is to prepare students for their professional and personal futures. We are convinced that socio-technological progress will fundamentally transform how future lawyers, judges, and other legal experts work. It will therefore be vital for our students to develop a solid understanding of how technology influences the law, as well as its creation, scholarly research, and application. For this reason, we provide them with technical and transdisciplinary knowledge, guiding them to adopt an interdisciplinary and international approach to legal questions.
As an interdisciplinary department, we offer courses covering areas such as data protection, artificial intelligence, digital and IT law (especially European digital and IT law), copyright law, consumer protection law, as well as technology and innovation law. Most of these formats are electives; however, the course Methodenlehre, Juristisches Arbeiten und Legal Tech (Legal Methodology, Academic Legal Writing, and Legal Tech) is a mandatory component of the Diploma Programme in Law at the University of Vienna, and the module Digital Law is a compulsory subject in the Bachelor's Programme in International Legal Studies (IREWI). Alongside our traditional course offerings, we also feature experimental formats such as the annual Legal Tech Hackathon (organized in cooperation with FH Campus Wien), the Price Media Law Moot Court, the Data Protection Moot Court, and the Legal Design Sprint hosted in partnership with the Vienna Chamber of Labour (AK Wien). In addition, we naturally offer many other engaging electives, seminars, and practical exercises.
The following overview is non-exhaustive and is primarily intended to provide an orientation—especially for first-year students and in light of the new curriculum. Detailed information can be found in the course directory on u:find.

Our Graduate Continuing Education Programs
The LL.M. program in “Information and Media Law” at the University of Vienna, under the academic direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Nikolaus Forgó, is based on the concept of the course in “Information Law and Legal Information” established in 1999 at the University of Vienna’s Faculty of Law, which has been continuously expanded ever since. This university course focuses on education in information law that takes into account the growing importance of information and data in society.
Information and media law is subject to constant change due to technological developments, innovation, and digitization. Accordingly, the University of Vienna also offers the “IT-Law Update” certification course to best prepare graduates of the university program as well as members of the IT-Law.AT academic interest group for these changes. By the end of the program, participants will be able to analyze, evaluate, and resolve legal issues arising from current developments in information technology. This program is also under the academic direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Nikolaus Forgó.
