Since its founding in 2017, the Department of Innovation and Digitalisation in Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Vienna has seen itself as a key interface between the legal community and the digital as well as socio-technological revolution. In an era of rapid change, we provide the academic foundation to address complex legal issues within the modern information and innovation society.
Our expertise spans the entire spectrum of IT law and intellectual property law. In doing so, the Department of Innovation and Digitalisation in Law focuses on the following core areas:
Data Protection Law & Copyright Law: Analysis of legal frameworks in an interconnected world.
E-Commerce & Consumer Protection: European and comparative legal perspectives on the digital single market.
Legal Tech & Digital Transformation: Research into innovations within legal professions and the legal system.
Regulation of Future Technologies: Legal analysis and support for Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), autonomous vehicles, robotics, drones, and developments in the life sciences.
We are convinced that addressing technological advances from a legal perspective is inextricably linked to ethical and social questions. Therefore, the Department of Innovation and Digitalisation in Law pursues a consistently multidisciplinary approach.
Our reputation is reflected in numerous externally funded research projects in which we collaborate with international partners to develop solutions for healthcare, law enforcement, and future technological safety and security. In doing so, we not only ensure the transfer of knowledge between academia and practice, but also actively help shape the regulatory framework for a responsible digital future.
The department is home to professors and their assistants (academic assistants, student research assistants, and administrative assistants), as well as lecturers, adjunct faculty, and research fellows.
The law of digitalisation and innovation is an inherently cross-cutting field, which is why our course offerings span the entire degree programme. In addition, we offer numerous courses that form part of various areas of specialisation (formerly elective clusters).

Our research projects are dedicated to key legal challenges of digitalisation. A major portion of our research is funded through competitive third-party grants—in particular within the framework of EU funding programmes.
Our publications and activities encompass virtually the entirety of Austrian and European law, with a particular focus on current developments (e.g. digitalisation). From the Telecommunications Act 2021 to the EU AI Act, we provide in-depth analyses and up-to-date scholarly contributions.
Knowledge transfer and mutual exchange enhance the impact and reach of academic debate, enriching research across the ever-expanding field of law, digitalisation, and innovation. For this reason, the Department of Innovation and Digitalisation in Law actively fosters and establishes partnerships with strategically selected national and international stakeholders.
