Geopolitical Fragmentation and international Data Flows: The New Reality

07.03.2025 10:00 - 11:30

The Department of Innovation and Digitalisation in Law of the University of Vienna invites you to the guest lecture "Geopolitical Fragmentation and international Data Flows: The New Reality" by Prof. Christopher Kuner.

Despite the growth of data protection and privacy law around the world, instability and risks arising from wars, trade disputes, and the weakening of the rule of law are leading to an alarming fragmentation in legal protections for data transferred across borders. How we cope with the international tensions resulting from such fragmentation will determine whether it is possible to build a workable framework for the protection of global data flows.

These and other exciting topics will be addressed by Prof. Christopher Kuner in his guest lecture followed by a discussion. Prof. Christopher Kuner has been active in EU and global data protection law since the early 1990s as a lawyer, author, and academic. He is currently Affiliate Professor at the University of Copenhagen and Senior Privacy Counsel in the Brussels office of Wilson Sonsini, as well as being a member of the European Commission's Multisectoral Stakeholder Group on the GDPR. He has taught at various leading universities including the University of Cambridge, the European University Institute, Chuo University in Tokyo, and the Hague Academy of International Law, as well as being a partner at various international law firms. He was also awarded a medal from the Consumer Affairs Agency of the government of Japan for his services to data protection law. The author of numerous articles and books, Prof. Kuner is one of the principal editors of the commentary on the GDPR published by Oxford University Press.

The guest lecture will take place in the Seminar Room in Schenkenstraße 4/2nd floor, 1010 Vienna on 7. March 2025 between 10:00-11:30. While the session is primarily intended for academic statt, it is not limited to participants from the Law Faculty and we encourage anyone interested to join us.

As space is limited, please register here until 6. March 2025. Attendance is free of charge.

We look forward to seeing many of you there!
