Data Ethics Commission under scrutiny - do the recommendations need to be updated?

12.02.2024

On 29 January 2024, the European Data Protection Day 2024 (“Europäischer Datenschutztag”) took place in Berlin with the topic of "Digital transformation - shaping the future of data protection".

As former Co-Chair of the Data Ethics Commission, Christiane Wendehorst reflected in her presentation on the Commission's findings, which were summarised in an Opinion for the German government in 2019. The Opinion contains ethical guidelines and specific recommendations for action, including on artificial intelligence and the handling of data.

The Data Ethics Commission has achieved a great success! This is because the EU legislator has based its actions for both data and algorithmic systems on the Commission's theoretical concepts. For this reason, the recommendations should now either be labelled as "completed" or the wording should be clearly adapted.

Further information on conference and a recording of the presentations can be found here. (Available only in German)
