Welcome to the Department of Innovation and Digitalisation in Law!

The Department of Innovation and Digitalisation in Law was founded in 2017 at the Faculty of Law of the University of Vienna. We consider the Department of Innovation and Digitalisation in Law a link between the Faculty of Law and the digital and socio-technological revolution.

We explore a variety of legal issues in the modern media, information and innovation society, which emerge from the continued rapid increase in socio-technological innovations. The Department deals with information technology and intellectual property law, with a special focus on data protection and copyright law. One of the key research areas is e-commerce law and consumer protection law from a European point of view and from the perspective of comparative law, as well as legal tech and innovation in the legal professions and legal system. Another focus of research is the regulation of socio-technological innovations, such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of things, autonomous vehicles, drones, robotics or other developments in life sciences.

We are convinced that an adequate response to legal, ethical and social questions, which arise with the development of technological innovations, requires an interdisciplinary approach. Therefore, we are working on numerous multidisciplinary third-party-funded projects, focusing especially on the healthcare sector, artificial intelligence, robotics, life sciences or criminal prosecution.
