Teaching in Summer Semester 2024

The Department of Innovation and Digitalisation in Law offers a wide range of different courses, many of them in cooperation with universities, law firms and various other institutions.

The goal of the Department is to prepare the students for their professional and personal future. We believe that technology will change the way a future lawyer, judge or other legal expert will work. It will be essential for our students to have a basic understanding of how technology changes the law and the way legal research and practice has been conducted so far. Thus, we try to provide our students with technical and transdisciplinary knowledge and teach them to deal with legal problems in an interdisciplinary and international manner.

As an interdisciplinary department we offer a variety of courses, i.e. on data protection, IT law (especially European IT law), copyright law or Artificial Intelligence. Most of the courses offered are electives, however the course "Legal Research" is mandatory for every student of the Law School. Once a year, together with FH Campus Wien we organise a university course in the form of a Hackathon. There, law and computer science students cooperate to develop Legal Tech tools by using different programming languages. The goal is to come up with ideas that support lawyers, judges, legal interns and other legal professionals to make their everyday´s work more efficient by developing tools that - for example - automise repetitive processes. The winners of the Hackathon will be given the opportunity to present their product at the "Legal Startup Day", an event where various experts from different fields and startup founders give keynotes on topics such as digitalisation in the legal sector, blockchain, big data or legal tech. In the summer term 2020 the winners were invited to present their product in our podcast "Ars Boni".
